Medieval Fayre

Winterbourne Medieval Barn

11am-4pm

Winterbourne Medieval Barn, built in 1342, is an extraordinary survivor of our medieval past. It was commissioned by Sir Thomas de Bradeston, who was Lord of the Manor of Winterbourne. In 1393 King Richard II granted Blanche Bradeston the right to hold a weekly market in Winterbourne and to hold two fairs, in June and October each year. The Medieval Fayre is held in June to remember that permission granted over 600 years ago.

Medieval activities will take place under the guidance of the living history group The Company of Chivalry. Experience what 14th century daily life was like at the time when Winterbourne Barn was built. Wander around the medieval encampment with authentic tents and fire pit, talk to folk going about their daily tasks, and discover how people lived, worked and fought on campaign during the Hundred Years’ War.

There will be a full programme of demonstrations and talks throughout the day about different aspects of medieval life, plus live medieval music, and plenty of activities for children including dressing-up in medieval costumes and armour, hands-on craft, and face-painting.

Wander round artisan and craft stalls in the medieval barn, and enjoy quality food, including pizza, BBQ, pastries, cakes, candy floss and ice cream. The Barn Bar offers a range of alcoholic or soft drinks, teas and coffees, and snacks.

A lovely affordable family day out at this unique heritage site. Well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome. Dogs remain the responsibility of the owner within the grounds.

Entry is £5 for adults, £1 for children aged 3-16yrs (card or cash). Tickets can be pre-booked online at Ticketsource to minimise queues on the gate.

FREE car parking is available at Winterbourne Academy on the High Street (BS36 1JL) with FREE shuttle buses running all day. Parking on Church Lane is not allowed as this obstructs emergency vehicles and the shuttle buses. Limited car parking for blue badge holders only is available on site but MUST be reserved in advance - email below. There is plenty of room for cycle parking on site.

Buses Y1 and Y2 (operated by First) run between Bristol and Yate along Winterbourne High Street. Bus Y6 runs from Yate to Parkway Station and The Mall via Beacon Lane and the High Street.
